Foundation Stage: Nursery and Reception

The Nursery and Reception classes are known as the Foundation Stage. The Foundation Stage curriculum focuses on six areas of development:

  - personal, social and emotional development
  - communication, language and literacy
  - mathematical development
  - knowledge and understanding of the world
  - physical development
  - creative development

Much of this curriculum is covered by activities which are planned meticulously by the teacher but are regarded as play by the children. As the Foundation Stage continues in Reception there are still many play activities but gradually work becomes more formal, so that by the last term in Reception children spend a full hour each day on English and Maths as well as working at other subjects.
