Ashmount Girls Victorious!
Ashmount's Girls' Football Team proved they are the best in Islington when they blew away the best that Islington could offer.
With the league season over, the top four teams contested the first Islington Primary Schools League Finals Day, all hoping to be crowned champions, on a lovely spring day at Whittington Park.
Their first game was against Gillespie who had topped the Southern group, but after a goalless first half the girls upped their game and ran away 3-0 victors, with Lauren Josiah scoring two and captain Sacha Morris also on the score sheet.
St Joan of Arc was their next opponent and, having already met earlier in the season, the girls knew they were in for a tough game. However, quick thinking from Aaliyah Willoughby allowed Lauren to score early, and a minute later Lauren doubled her tally to leave the girls two up at the break.
The second half saw Ashmount remain disciplined, with Sacha Morris, Tekla Akalu, Heather Simpson and Aaliyah Willoughby controlling the midfield. Billie Cook and Sophie Kitson, despite not being 100%, repelled any attacks that SJOA tried.
Unknowingly, by virtue of beating SJOA the girls were already champions, but a 100% record was at stake, so they were kept in suspense for another 12 minutes. Just as before, Ashmount's girls were far too strong and swept aside Laycock 3-0, with Lauren scoring another brace and Sacha scoring her second goal of the day.
Fellow squad members Isabella Weir and Gemma Cooper demonstrated their talents with fine performances, and as the final whistle blew the girls were jubilant.
A special mention must go to goalkeeper Remii Duncan who was unbeatable and did not concede a single goal during the whole day.
A memorable end to a great day, and the school should be immensely proud of the girls' achievements. In over 15 matches this season they have remained unbeaten, when up against some extremely good sides.
On behalf of the girls I would like to thank Tracy and David Morrell at Power Plate for their generous gesture of sponsoring the team with easily the best-looking kit in Islington, which I'm sure contributed to their success.
